Climate change is a complex problem that affects us all, but it is still very badly understood by the general population.

We don’t have much time, but by understanding the challenge we can take our response to the next level.

Climate Fresk prompts participants to take constructive action to help tackle climate change.

Our ambition is to create a network of people that is growing exponentially who can pass on this quality climate education in order to reach a social tipping point that will help guide us to a low carbon world.

Climate Fresk Vision

What is Climate Fresk?

Climate Fresk is an innovative and engaging card game designed to enhance public understanding of climate science. Created by French engineer Cédric Ringenbach in 2015, the game has rapidly gained popularity, with over 1.5 million participants across 157 countries. It serves as a powerful educational tool, transforming complex scientific data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports into an accessible and interactive format.

Who Created Climate Fresk?

The game was developed by Cédric Ringenbach, a former director of The Shift Project, an organization focused on transitioning to a low-carbon economy. Ringenbach’s goal was to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and public understanding, making the intricate details of climate change more comprehensible and actionable.

How is Climate Fresk Played?

Climate Fresk is played in a collaborative workshop setting, typically lasting around three hours. Here’s how it works:

  1. Card Arrangement: Participants are given 42 cards, each representing a different aspect of climate change, from human activities to environmental consequences like sea level rise and ocean acidification.
  2. Teamwork and Discussion: Working in groups, participants arrange the cards on a blank canvas to create a ‘fresco’ mural. This process involves discussing and linking the cards to build a coherent storyboard of climate change.
  3. Facilitator Guidance: A facilitator helps explain the connections between the cards, adding more cards to the board as the game progresses. This iterative process continues until all cards are placed, forming a comprehensive visual representation of climate change.
  4. Drawing Connections: Teams draw literal connections between the cards, highlighting the intricate relationships within the climate narrative.
  5. Naming the Fresco: Each group names their fresco piece, reflecting their collective understanding and perspective on climate change.

Debrief and Action Planning

After completing the fresco, participants engage in a debrief session where they:

  • Explore Solutions: Discuss how they can be part of the solution to climate change, both individually and collectively.
  • Identify Actions: Look at specific actions they can take personally and as part of wider groups or organizations.
  • Empowerment: Feel empowered to implement the climate actions identified during the game.

For organizations looking to reduce their carbon footprint, this debrief session can be a valuable starting point. It helps employees and stakeholders understand their role in the climate crisis and explore actionable steps to make a positive impact.

Goals of Climate Fresk

The primary goals of Climate Fresk are to:

  • Educate: Simplify complex climate science and make it accessible to a broader audience.
  • Empower: Enable participants to understand the systematic nature of climate challenges and feel empowered to take action.
  • Foster Dialogue: Encourage positive and open conversations about climate change and potential solutions.
  • Catalyze Action: Inspire both individuals and organizations to implement climate actions identified during the game.
